General

PixelCloak is a browser extension that captures your current tab, automatically detects sensitive information (emails, phone numbers, API keys, credit card numbers, and more), and lets you redact it before exporting a clean PNG — all without uploading anything to a server.

Detection is split across two tiers:

Free

  • ✓ Email addresses
  • ✓ Phone numbers
  • ✓ Credit card numbers
  • ✓ Manual redaction (draw anywhere)

Pro

  • ✓ SSN / National IDs
  • ✓ API keys & tokens
  • ✓ JWT tokens
  • ✓ Custom regex patterns

The free tier includes 5 exports per day, reset at midnight. Pro gives you unlimited exports. The counter resets automatically — no account required.

No account is needed for the free tier. An account is required only to purchase and manage a Pro license. You can create one at pixelcloak.app/login.

Privacy & Security

Never. All image processing — capture, OCR, detection, and redaction — happens entirely inside your browser. No screenshot data, partial image, or pixel is transmitted to any server. The only network calls the extension makes are to verify your license.

Each permission has a specific, minimal purpose:

activeTabCapture the currently visible tab when you click the button or use the shortcut. No other tabs are ever accessed.
storageStore your settings, detection preferences, and daily usage count locally on your device.
scriptingInject a script to extract visible text blocks from the page for detection — runs only on the active tab, only when triggered.
tabsOpen the editor in a new tab after capture.

Your extension settings (theme, redaction style, detection toggles), daily usage count, and — if you have Pro — your activation token and device ID. No screenshot data is ever persisted. Everything is stored in chrome.storage.local, which is isolated to the extension and never synced to the cloud.

Chrome & Edge

  1. 1Visit the Chrome Web Store or Edge Add-ons and search for PixelCloak.
  2. 2Click Add to Chrome (or Get on Edge).
  3. 3The PixelCloak icon will appear in your toolbar. Click it or press Alt+Shift+S to start.
  1. 1Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts (Chrome) or edge://extensions/shortcuts (Edge) in your address bar.
  2. 2Find PixelCloak in the list.
  3. 3Click the pencil icon next to the current shortcut and press your preferred key combination.
  4. 4The new shortcut takes effect immediately — no reload needed.

The default shortcut is Alt+Shift+S. You can also trigger capture by clicking the extension icon in the toolbar.

By default, extensions cannot access file:// URLs. You need to grant permission once per browser.

  1. 1Open chrome://extensions (Chrome) or edge://extensions (Edge).
  2. 2Find PixelCloak and click Details.
  3. 3Scroll down and toggle Allow access to file URLs on.
  4. 4Open any local file in your browser and try capturing — it should work immediately.

This permission is browser-level and only applies to the device you set it on. You will need to repeat this step on other devices.

Yes. PixelCloak is available on the Opera Add-ons store and works on any Chromium-based browser including Brave and Vivaldi. Install as an unpacked extension or from the respective store.

Firefox

  1. 1Visit addons.mozilla.org and click Add to Firefox.
  2. 2Confirm the permissions prompt.
  3. 3Click the PixelCloak icon in the toolbar or press Alt+Shift+S to capture.

Firefox does not have a direct URL shortcut for extension keyboard settings. Follow these steps:

  1. 1Type about:addons in the Firefox address bar and press Enter.
  2. 2Click the Extensions tab on the left.
  3. 3Click the gear icon (⚙) at the top right of the extensions list.
  4. 4Select Manage Extension Shortcuts.
  5. 5Find PixelCloak and click the input field next to the shortcut.
  6. 6Press your preferred key combination. It saves automatically.

Yes — no extra permission is needed on Firefox. Unlike Chrome and Edge, Firefox extensions with activeTab permission can already access file:// URLs. Just open a local file in Firefox and use PixelCloak normally.

Functionally identical. Minor UI differences:

  • • The "Change shortcut" link opens about:addons instructions instead of navigating directly
  • • The "Allow local file access" setting row is hidden — not needed on Firefox
  • • Firefox requires version 111 or newer

Troubleshooting

Try these steps in order:

  1. 1Reload the page you want to capture, then try again.
  2. 2Reload the extension: open your browser\'s extensions page, find PixelCloak, toggle it off and back on.
  3. 3Check that the extension is enabled and not blocked by a content security policy on the page.
  4. 4If you are trying to capture a local file, make sure file access is enabled — see How do I enable capturing local files above.
  5. 5Still stuck? Email support@pixelcloak.app with your browser version and a description of the page you were trying to capture.

A few options:

  • • Use Manual Redact in the editor to draw a box over anything that was missed.
  • • If you have Pro, add a custom regex pattern in Settings to catch your specific format on every future capture.
  • • Found a pattern that should be detected by default? Let us know at support@pixelcloak.app — we actively update the default detection rules.
  1. 1Make sure you are copying the full key including any dashes (format: RDX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX).
  2. 2Check that you have not already activated on 3 devices. If so, remove a device at pixelcloak.app/account/license first.
  3. 3Ensure you have an internet connection — activation requires a one-time server call.
  4. 4Still not working? Contact support@pixelcloak.app with your license key and we will investigate.
